Lessons
Can you tell me more about the lessons?
The lessons are taught 1-on-1 so that you can receive my full attention. This will also ensure that you make fast progress. Each lesson lasts for 55 minutes and is taught via Skype or Zoom. Skype and Zoom allow us to communicate and share learning materials as if we were in the same room.
During the first lesson and/or the trial session, I will assess your level and discuss your goals with you so I can shape my lessons to your individual needs.
Taking 1-on-1 lessons will help you to improve your speaking and listening skills. However, we can also work on other skills such as grammar, writing, vocabulary learning, as well as specific challenges such as using French at work & passing exams. Whatever your level, needs and motivation, you can sign up for a trial session and see if online lessons are the right choice for you!
Who are the lessons suitable for?
The lessons are suitable for students with any level and with all sorts of different needs (work, travel, integration etc.)
When can I take lessons?
You can learn at a pace that you’re comfortable with — it’s up to you when and how often you take lessons. Of course, you can always check my availability before booking lessons to see if that fits your schedule.
How long does a lesson last for?
Each lesson lasts for approximatively 55 minutes. This is an optimal length as it allows for a lot to be covered and for students to maintain their concentration levels. It’s also short enough to squeeze into students’ busy lives! If you want to take longer lessons, you can simply book two lessons back to back, so that you can have 2 hours lesson with a 5 minute break in the middle.
Where do the lessons take place?
The lessons are taught via Skype or Zoom, you’re free to choose the platform you prefer!
Why are the lessons taught via Skype or Zoom?
Skype or Zoom are free and one of the best tool for video-conferences but also instant messaging. It allows us to do everything we would do in a classroom: read, write, speak, listen and share learning materials. Once the lesson is over, the student can revise everything they’ve learnt from their mobile or laptop.
I’m new to Skype and Zoom - which is better and are they easy to set up?
Skype and Zoom are very similar and both have all the required features for effective online lessons. Both are simple to set up and use. When you book your trial session with me, in the form you’ll fill in, you can choose whether you prefer having the sessions on Zoom or Skype. Whichever tool you opt for, I recommend downloading it well in advance of the session. For Skype, you’d need to sign up and send me a request. With Zoom, you would not need an account and I would give you an access link to use instead.

Is video used or just audio?
Most of the time I use both video and audio. We can, occasionally, turn the camera off and just using audio in order to focus the mind on the language. Or, if there’s a poor connection, turning the camera off can improve the connection.
Will I need to buy any materials?
No, you won’t need to — I will share all the necessary materials with you online.
What do I need to have in order to take lessons?
To take lessons with me, all you’ll need is the following :
- A good internet connection
- A free Skype account (if you are not using Zoom instead)
- A laptop (or a desktop computer), tablet or smartphone. Most people will think that the speakers and microphone on their device are sufficient. However, occasionally students choose to use a headset or headphones with a microphone in order to enhance the sound quality.
You won’t have to buy any books whatsoever!
Is it possible to have lessons for two persons instead of one?
As long as you and your learning partner both have the same level and are in the same room, it is possible! And, the cost will be the same. When you book and fill in your details, just make it clear that there are two of you.
Are the lessons suitable for teenagers?
Teenagers can also take French lessons to support their school/college studies (or just for fun!). In that case, the student can share their school materials via email and the lessons either follow these materials or cover related topics. However, it is necessary to have the parents’ permission, who should also give their child’s age and describe their needs when booking the trial session.
I’m a complete beginner, how are we going to communicate?
We can always use English as needed! I speak English and I’ve been teaching English-speakers since late 2016. So, there won’t be any communication problems.
I’ve already been studying French for a while. How will you evaluate my current level?
I will assess your language level and discuss your specific learning goals during the trial session. Then, I will customise the lessons based on this.
What is your teaching approach?
I have a communicative method which is based on the idea that learning a language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. When learners are involved in real communication, their natural strategies for language acquisition will be used, and this will allow them to learn to use the language. Therefore, my lessons are more learner-centred. However, this doesn’t mean that we will only have conversations. I also believe in the effectiveness of structured lessons.
How does a lesson go?
It depends on a lot of things, like your level, needs, goals etc… However, I like working on different materials. A short extract from an article for example or a video on YouTube, an audio to listen to, an image to describe etc. I like changing the materials and using efficient content to improve your French so you don’t have the impression to study a language from a textbook like back in school. And, with all of these materials we will be focusing on listening and written comprehension but also on written and spoken expression. We will for example learn useful vocabulary so you can use them in your conversations and understand them. We will see some important grammar rules so you can put a good structure to your sentences. And with some practical exercises you will be able to speak more French and understand better as lessons go.
Will I have homework to do?
I recommend you to do some “homework” after the lessons. I’m not going to give you endless and boring grammar exercises about a specific rule. I’m not going to ask you to write an essay in formal French. But I rather give you some tasks to do. For example, watching a video that I’ll recommend you, answering some comprehension questions. Or, making simple sentences with the new vocab that you’ve seen during the lessons. It can really be anything depending on your level and needs and time you’re willing to dedicate. Later, we will correct them and see how we can improve more.
When can I see progress?
This is a question I hear a lot. Of course, there isn’t one simple answer. It depends on your level, on your ability to learn a new language, on the time you’re willing to dedicate on learning French. But, studies show that in 3 months with regular learning and revision you can achieve conversational fluency if you’re a beginner/basic-level student. And, I have seen great achievements from my students so it’s definitely possible to put a time but you must also enjoy the journey of learning French. And, I’m here for that.
I want to take an exam certificating my level, can I still have lessons with you?
If your goal is to take an exam like the DELF/DALF exam, I’m very much experienced in that, I had several students who took them. We can definitely shape the lessons for that, we will have exam-like exercises, papers so you can have everything you need to take the exam.

Booking, rescheduling & viewing lessons
How do I reschedule or cancel a lesson?
Your options for rescheduling or cancelling a lesson depend on whether you logged in when booking. Using an account and logging in are optional – many students decide to skip this and simply apply their credits by entering their email address.
If you did not log in when you booked the relevant lesson, you have a couple of options for rescheduling/cancelling:
- Go to the confirmation email you received after booking your lesson(s) (search ‘BlaBlaFrench confirmation’ in your email program to find the email). Then, click on the View, Reschedule or Cancel button within the email and you’ll be taken to the rescheduling/cancellation page.
- If you used the ‘Add to calendar’ option after booking your lesson, you can go to the lesson in your Google/Outlook/iCal calendar. Click on it and open the link in your browser to access the rescheduling/cancellation page.
Alternatively, if you registered an account and were logged in when you booked the relevant lesson, you can log in on the right of the booking page (found under ‘book lessons’ in the navigation menu). After logging in you’ll see your upcoming lessons and you’ll be able to reschedule or cancel in a few clicks.
Important: If you forgot to log in when booking, you will not be able to see all of your upcoming lessons in your account – you will instead need to reschedule via options 1 or 2 above, or ask support to attach the lessons to your account.
If you can’t work out how to reschedule/cancel by one of the methods mentioned above, you can try contacting me via Skype or email to request the change. However, note that doing so is not recommended as the message may not be seen in time to allow your request.
If less than 24 hours are remaining before your lesson, you will not be able to reschedule or cancel the lesson.
How does booking work?
Our unique booking system makes scheduling and managing lessons simple. After making a purchase, you will be given credits that you can apply by entering your email address on the booking page. Then, you’ll see my availability in your time zone and all you’ll have to do is select a time and confirm. If you have a Google, iCal or Outlook Calendar, you’ll have the option of directly adding your lesson to your calendar. An email reminder will be sent to you so that you don’t forget to turn up. You’ll also receive an SMS reminder if when booking you added your mobile number with the country code included. You can reschedule up to 24 hours before your lesson using the booking system (see below for more on this). You can also create an account so that you can save your lesson times for future viewing, however this is completely optional!
I can’t find suitable time on the calendar, what should I do?
Most of the students can find suitable time for lessons as I’m pretty flexible. During the trial lesson, we will also discuss your and my availability to make sure it matches your schedule. However, if you still can’t find a suitable time please contact me at leyla@blablafrench.com to see if I can open up slots on demand! You can also book lessons for 3 months so that will give you more options to organise your lessons.
When booking, why am I being taken to a payment page even though I’ve already bought credits?
When you’re on the booking page, you will see there is a button at the top: ‘Redeem Package’. You need to click this and enter the email you used when purchasing. After you have done this, you will not be asked for payment after selecting a booking slot.
How do I access the booking system?
You can access it either via the ‘Book Lessons’ tab on the navigation menu, or via the links in your confirmation emails.
Do I need to do anything after I book lessons?
If you haven’t already added your lesson(s) to your calendar, I would suggest doing so via the link in your confirmation email. This will help ensure you don’t forget to turn up and lose your lesson credit.
Should I log in before booking, and where can I view my upcoming lessons?
It’s completely up to you whether you register an account and log in before booking. The main advantage of doing so is that you can then view your upcoming lessons by going directly to the website and logging in on the booking page. However, many students prefer to skip logging in because it makes booking faster. They can still view and change their upcoming lessons via their confirmation emails.
If you registered an account but cannot see all of your upcoming lessons after logging in, it is likely because you did not log in when you booked. You’ll need to reschedule via the link in your booking confirmation email, or contact leyla@blablafrench.com and ask to attach the lessons to your account.
How do I log in / Reset my password?
Most of the time when students have trouble logging in, it turns out that they had not previously been logging in to book lessons. When booking, creating an account & logging in are optional.
If you are sure that you have created an account and want to use it, you can reset your password via this link.
If you have not been logging in and are happy to continue booking without doing so, simply enter your email to apply your credits on the booking page.
(You may be wondering, what is the advantage of creating an account and logging in? Well, this is required if you want to view, reschedule or cancel lessons by going directly to the booking page. If you don’t log in when booking lessons, you can still reschedule/cancel them via the links in your booking emails (search ‘BlaBlaFrench confirmation’ in your email program to find these emails).

Do I have to complete my lessons within a certain time period?
